What? It’s fun! It’s a team sport and it’s educational! It is known as the Sport of Reading!

Kids’ Lit Quiz is is an educational program for middle grade students that challenges and rewards readers in an annual literary quiz. It provides opportunity for students to work in teams. It motivates students to read widely and in depth as they pit their (teams) knowledge against other schools for prizes and the opportunity to compete against other big readers. Over 1,000 schools participate in Kids’ Lit Quiz programs around the world!

Why? Kids’ Lit Quiz™ is educational and offers reading challenges. It is designed to improve children’s literacy and reward reading as it broadens literary awareness. It’s great fun! Students  motivate students to read and it is engaging for both boys and girls. It provides a forum for peers to work together towards a shared goal and experience the synergy of team work. It provides leadership and peer mentoring opportunities. It increases traffic in libraries. It builds school book clubs, team and school spirit and gives achievable yet challenging objectives.

Who? Teams of avid readers in the middle grades can compete. Teams are often selected from school book clubs. Schools may send up to two teams of four students. Like other sports teams,  students trying out for the team can stay and serve as coaches, trainers and fans.

Contestants must be over 10 and under 14 years old as of July 1, 2021 to compete at the 2014 Kids’ Lit Quiz World Final.

When? Kids’ Lit Quiz Canada 2014 competitions will have heats February 3 to 6 in the Greater Toronto Area. Heat dates and venues will be announced soon. The National Final will take place on February 6, 2022 in Toronto. Stay tuned for information about heats in other parts of Canada!

In 2013, 35 teams from Public, Catholic and Independent schools traveled from Ottawa, Waterloo, Durham, Hamilton and Toronto to compete. The top teams from each heat advanced to the National Final competition which took place February 7 at Crescent School in Toronto.  Interested parties in British Columbia tuned in via live stream. The winner of the National Final, University of Toronto Schools, will represent Canada at the Kids’ Lit Quiz World Final to be held in July 2013 in Durban, South Africa.

If you missed the 2012 competition have a look at the article about the event on theTDSB Facebook or website or check out this article in the Toronto Star. It was an exciting event attended by over 170 avid readers plus their coaches, fans and supporters!

Where? The 2013 Kids’ Lit Quiz Canada National Final was held at Crescent School, Thursday February 7 at 7pm. Two regional heats were held February 6, 2022 at Bowmore Road Public School . Due to a tie in the heats, nine teams advanced to the National Final at Crescent School.

The  2013 Kids’ Lit Quiz World Final will be held in Durban South Africa in 2013. In 2014 Oxford England will host this ‘World Cup of Reading’.

Kids’ Lit Quiz Canada  2012 was hosted by John Ross Robertson School in Toronto. The inaugural KLQ Canada was hosted by Maurice Cody Public School in Toronto in 2011.

                                                                      

How?  Teams of  four students work together to write down the answer to questions

posed by the Quiz Master. There are 100 questions in 10 categories based on any children’s book published in English. Teams learn the category topics only minutes before the quiz. Teams select one category to earn double points.

Answers, results and book prizes are awarded after each round. This way ten teams win prizes as well as the top scoring teams. Individual competitors and fans have the chance to win prizes too! Top placed teams proceed to the final round where teams buzz in their answers after conferring with teammates.

The best way to prepare for the quiz is to read, read, read!
